Direct answer
Argentine citizenship by investment applicants should expect the authorities to verify that the invested funds come from lawful sources and that the applicant's overall wealth is explained. In practice, that means a documented chain from how wealth was generated to the specific transfer used for the investment, channelled through the formal financial system and supported by apostilled and translated documents where they are foreign.
Key facts
- 01The program announced in October 2026 contemplates controls on the origin of funds.
- 02Funds must be channelled through the formal financial system.
- 03Source of funds concerns the specific money; source of wealth concerns how total net worth was built.
- 04Banks apply their own AML procedures independently of the citizenship review.
Two related concepts
Source of funds asks: where does this transfer come from? Source of wealth asks: how did this person come to have the means to make it? A clean bank transfer from an account in the applicant's name answers the first question only partially if the account was funded from a sale or distribution that is not itself documented.
Typical evidence
- Corporate records and financial statements for business income
- Sale agreements and closing statements for company or asset sales
- Dividend resolutions and brokerage statements
- Employment contracts and payslips, or professional invoices
- Probate and inheritance documents
- Loan agreements and evidence of repayment
- Tax returns in the country of residence
- Bank statements tracing the transfer
Where files usually fail
The most frequent difficulties are old transactions without documents, money moved through several entities, family gifts that were never formalised, and differences between declared income and accumulated assets. None of these is necessarily disqualifying, but each needs to be addressed with evidence or an explanation prepared in advance. See source of funds and source of wealth services.
Legal considerations
- The applicant bears the burden of showing a lawful origin; gaps are generally resolved against the applicant.
- Argentine anti-money-laundering rules (Law 25.246) shape how financial institutions treat incoming funds.
- Tax consequences in the home country should be reviewed by the client's tax adviser.
Frequently asked questions
Can family money be used for the investment?
Possibly, but the gift or loan and the family member's own source of wealth will generally need to be documented. This should be analysed before the transfer.
Can I use funds from cryptocurrency?
Any source must be documented and channelled through the formal financial system. Crypto-derived funds can raise additional traceability questions and should be reviewed case by case.
