Direct answer
Choose a lawyer who is admitted to practise in Argentina and identifiable by name and bar registration, who explains what the framework says and what is still pending, who does not promise approval or fixed timelines, who can handle due diligence and source-of-funds work, and who can coordinate with your advisers abroad in your language. Ask for a written scope and fee agreement before work begins.
Key facts
- 01Argentine lawyers are registered with provincial or city bar associations and, for federal matters, before the Supreme Court; registrations can be checked.
- 02Guarantees of citizenship, of fixed processing times or of "government approval" are warning signs.
- 03A lawyer acting for you should not be paid by the program or by a seller of investment products.
- 04Clear written scope and fees protect both client and lawyer.
Criteria that matter
- Admission: the lawyer's name and bar registration numbers are published and verifiable.
- Accountability: you know who is responsible for your file, not only a brand.
- Accuracy: the lawyer distinguishes enacted rules, regulations, announcements and pending implementation.
- Scope: the practice covers due diligence, source of funds, family documents and, if relevant, corporate work.
- Independence: no commission from the investment or from a product seller.
- Language and coordination: the lawyer can work in English and with your existing advisers.
Questions to ask in the first meeting
- Which rules currently govern my application, and which are still pending?
- What are the main legal risks in my case?
- Which documents will I need, and which might be difficult to obtain?
- How will my family members be treated?
- Who will work on my file, and how will we communicate?
- What exactly is included in the fee, and what is not?
Warning signs
Be cautious of anyone who guarantees citizenship, quotes a fixed processing time as if certain, claims to be an official agent of the Argentine Government, encourages you to transfer funds before any legal assessment, or presents a real estate purchase as a qualifying investment without pointing to the rule that allows it.
Legal considerations
- Bar registration is jurisdiction-specific; federal and provincial registrations serve different forums.
- Professional fees and scope should be agreed in writing before substantive work.
- No lawyer can lawfully promise the outcome of an administrative decision.
Frequently asked questions
Does the lawyer need to be in the same city as the authority?
Not necessarily. What matters is that the lawyer is admitted in the relevant jurisdiction and can act before the competent authority. Much of the work can be handled remotely.
Should I choose a large firm or an individual attorney?
Either can be appropriate. The key is knowing who is responsible for your matter and whether they have the relevant experience and availability.
